The Aussie contingent of Wildcards took on race one of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) at The Bend Motorsport Park and it was action a plenty with two red flags. The second red flag brought race to a halt, and race official decided to abandon the race and no points were awarded.
Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R) was our best placed Australian before the race was called off, sitting in 11th but earlier in the first running he sat as high as second before the second re-start. Scott Nicholson (NextGen Motorsports, Suzuki GSX-R600) was enjoying a much better day today than qualifying yesterday and was sitting in 15th.
It wasn’t great news for Broc Pearson (1800 Approved Cairns, Yamaha YZF-R6) who had a crash before the race was called off. It’s disappointing for Pearson who had been confident he could battle for a top 10 finish after his qualifying results.
Patrick Li (Webike Ikazuchi Racing) also had a difficult race and failed to see the conclusion of the race before it was abandoned.
Unfortunately, Zac Levy (Puma RV’s, YZF-R3) withdrew from the Asia 250 Production class and will now turn all his focus to his Australian Supersport 300 racing.
Fellow Aussie Travis Hall (SCK Rapido Hi Rev Honda Racing Team) had a decent race in the Underbone 150 championship. He managed to finish in ninth place.
Motorcycling Australia (MA) caught up with Toparis to get his thoughts on his first ARRC race.
“I’m a bit disappointed after the restart I was sent back to 17th on the grid after being fourth when the re-start was called, which was frustrating as I felt I had good pace. I found today I felt a lot more comfortable and I can’t thank the team enough for all the support and the work they have put in. It’s a shame we had issues in qualifying as I feel we could have been more competitive if we started higher up the grid,” said Toparis.
Stay tuned for the final day of the ASBK and ARRC doubleheader tomorrow to see how the wildcards fare.
