A massive weekend of motorcycle racing at the weekend saw plenty of Aussies in action right around the world flying the flag for Australia. MotoGP’s European season is in full swing, with action from LeMans in France claiming much of the headlines overnight thanks to a stellar performance from Marc Marquez. Elsewhere, a massive crowd of more than 50,000 saw the Boll Warsaw FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland start the Speedway GP season in spectacular style, outdoor motocross season began in the United States, and the Internationale Deutsche Motorradmeisterschaft (IDM) hit the Lausitzring.
At the French round of the MotoGP at Le Mans, Jack Miller managed to overtake Marc Marquez for the lead of the race in the early laps. Unfortunately though his pace seemed to drop away a little throughout the race, ending a creditable fourth just of the podium and first of the independent team riders.
Remy Gardner unfortunately had an off in the Moto2 race, leaving him ruing a lost opportunity after what was a strong performance up until that point, including a promising free practice and running fastest in the warm-up prior to the afternoon’s race.
Also racing at Le Mans was Billy Van Eerde, competing in the 3rd round of the CEV Junior World Moto3 Championships. A tough weekend for Billy saw him finish outside the points, and he’s looking forward to the next round at Mugello to build on his experience.
Heading over to the German IDM series at the Lausitzring on Germany’s Eastern border, Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) Supersport Championship leader Tom Toparis had an outstanding first outing in the German IDM series overnight, claiming third in Race 1 and climbing to the top step of the podium in Race 2 for an amazing first-round victory.
Tom Bramich took time in between his FIM World Supersport duties to compete in the IDM Supersport 300 class. A fourth in the first race was backed up by a sixth in the second race to complete a pair of good performances by the Aussies.
The FIM Speedway Grand Prix headed to Warsaw in Poland for the first round of the 2019 season in front of a huge local crowd of more than 50,000 fans. A disappointing night for the Aussies saw speedway legend Jason Doyle battling a punctured lung and broken rib from a crash racing for Torun in the PGE Ekstraliga in Poland earlier this month. He finished the night 13th, while Max Fricke had a fall in his last heat to scupper his chances of a good finish.
Outdoor motocross season kicked off on the weekend with the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at the Hangtown Motocross Classic. Dean Ferris kicked off the season with a ninth place finish in the 450 class, with an 11th place finish in the first Moto and a ninth place finish in the second.
