What got you into motorsport?
My father was a road racer who competed at local events in the 1950 and 60’s.
What got you into volunteering?
I had bikes growing up and I did a bit of Trial riding. When my son turned 5 I bought him a motorcycle and wanted to help out at the track when he competed because it’s a great sport for kids to take part it. I then got my Level 1 Official and then started helping out at the club at a Level 2 being a secretary. There was then a need for more officials to reach Level 3, and I then branched out from there to different disciplines. I got more experience by travelling around SA to different clubs
How long have you been a volunteer with MA?
I’ve been volunteering since 2006
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
Just the friendship and comradery. You get to meet up with people that you only see once a year. Motorcycles just never bore me, so being a volunteer and making friends makes this all worthwhile.
Most memorable moment whilst volunteering with MA?
4 years ago I was a sector leader at the MotoGP and Marquez crashed into another rider. There was total mayhem and the way the officials worked as a team was excellent. Because it was televised, the officials and the track looked really professional and that made be super proud.
Best experience as a volunteer (best event etc.)?
Working alongside Loris Capirossi is something I never thought would ever happen, but it did!
Best advice you’ve been given?
Keep a sense of humour and a level head. Look after each other especially when you’re trackside. Make friends!
Road racing. I love the speed, its so exciting. I especially love historic road racing, because it reminds me of when my dad raced.
Mallala Motor Sport Park, especially because its my home track that I’ve been a part of since I was young.
Mick Doohan. Such a lovely person and such a great rider.
What 2018 event are you most excited for?
Can’t wait for the MotoGP! I’m looking to develop toward a Clerk of Course role, so I’m looking to learn more about this role over the upcoming weekend.
