What got you into motorsport?
I’ve always loved watching all things racing on TV since I was little, but I started coming to racetracks when my ex-husband started racing – that’s when I really got caught up in the magic of live racing.
What got you into volunteering?
I remember being a spectator at the Australian MotoGP and being envious of the people on the other side of the fence getting so close to the action, so I asked around about how to get involved. Since then I’ve volunteered at local, state, interstate and international events. I’ve also tried my hand at car rallies, V8s and Formula1.
How long have you been a volunteer with MA?
It would be around 20 years or so, maybe more…
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
Without doubt, the people! You meet some true characters and make fantastic friendships, it’s an amazing feeling to spend a weekend with like-minded people whose eyes don’t glaze over if you talk bikes all day long LOL! Some people I will only see once a year at a major event but it’s like no time has passed and it’s so wonderful to see them again. And then there is my “flaggie” family at my home track, Morgan Park – the best bunch of people you could ever meet!
Most memorable moment whilst volunteering with MA?
Being asked to be part of Race Control for the Australian MotoGP and WSBK is a real honour. Having an international rider specifically find you to thank you is also a fantastic feeling. It’s also a really special moment when Marshals come up and remind me that a number of years ago I mentored them in their first days on a race track and that I made it so enjoyable for them, that they now come back.
Best experience as a volunteer (best event etc.)?
I think my proudest moment has been helping to put together a successful ASBK on our home track. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and the feeling you get when you watch it all come together seamlessly on the day is pretty special.
Best advice you’ve been given?
“Never assume” and “Don’t take it personally”. The “never assume” is a bit of a mantra for me, that’s why I drive everyone nuts with my questions!
Road Racing. I love all categories of Road Race, but I have a huge soft spot for sidecars.
Morgan Park without a doubt, followed closely by Phillip Island.
MotoGP – Marc Marquez (with a soft spot for Jack Miller)
WSBK – Marco Melandri
ASBK – Wayne Maxwell, Daniel Falzon and the Troys
Australian Sidecar Championships – Dave Boughan/Lok O’Kane (retired)
Locally – Locky Taylor (not so local anymore), Simon Dickson and any rider who waves to me
What 2019 event are you most excited for?
International Island Classic because that means that the racing season is starting again!
