What got you into motorsport?
My first introduction was forever ago when my mother’s brothers competed in Speedway!
What got you into volunteering?
My husband started racing in South Australia with the Historic Racing Register in Dirt Track and Speedway, and I thought I should get involved rather than sitting around.
I have been involved in a huge variety of disciplines, including Road Race, Dirt Track, Enduro, Motocross and Moto Trials. I enjoy keeping things a little bit different and tackling a variety of challenges.
How long have you been a volunteer with MA?
I have been volunteering now for about 16 years.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
Without a doubt, it’s meeting the loveliest people. It’s a beautiful, supportive community and you have the opportunity to mentor others, which reminds you of where you have come from and what this sport means to you.
Most memorable moment whilst volunteering with MA?
Honestly, the most memorable moment is when a four-year-old boy came up to me at a Motocross event and asked “Mrs. Rowley, did you see me jump over that great big jump?”. I looked over to the jump and its was about three inches high! That moment has stuck with me for a long time as a really heart-warming moment!
I have also had the pleasure of watching Connor Hogan compete and grow over the years. He is a standout competitor and young man.
Best experience as a volunteer (best event etc.)?
I was awarded, last year, a trophy for my work in Road Race in 2018 from Motorcycling South Australia, which was a really special moment for me.
Best advice you’ve been given?
Make a decision and stick to that decision.
Keep things consistent, too.
Those two pieces of advice have stuck with me and kept me in good stead.
I started off in Road Race, so I think that remains my favourite discipline.
What 2019 event are you most excited for?
I’m about to do the 24 hour Reliability Trial, which is a two day event, in Eudunda, South Australia. I really enjoy this event, so I would have to say that it the event I’m most looking forward to in the remaining 2019 racing season.
