After dry practice and qualifying on Friday, the heavens opened to make it a very damp weekend of racing in the 2023 Australian Historic Road Racing Championship at Baskerville.

In trying conditions, the riders still put on a show, with a number of 2023 champions crowd in Tasmania:

• P6 Formula 1300: Jason Wyllie (Suzuki)
• P2 Formula 750: Jamie Banks (Ducati)
• P6 Formula 750: Keo Watson (Ducati)
• P4 Unlimited: Jonathan Hughes (Honda)
• P4 Lightweight: Murray Seabrook (Yamaha)
• P6 Production 250: Stephany Kapilawi-James (Honda)

2023 Australian Historic Road Race Championship bound for Baskerville

It’s an annual pilgrimage for so many, and the latest instalment will take place at the Baskerville circuit in Hobart from November 24-26: the 2023 Australian Historic Road Race Championship (AHRRC).

A massive 179 riders will compete at the Sports Riders Club of Tasmania-promoted AHRRC, with a large number hitting the Apple Isle after competing in last year’s event at Morgan Park in Queensland.

Solo riders and sidecars will compete across all the historic racing eras, from Period 1 (machines up to 1919) up to Period 6 (1983 to 1990) in a variety of engine capacities.

The massive appeal of the AHRRC – for both riders and spectators – is the sheer diversity of hardware, and the Baskerville grids will not only be filled by purpose-built and production-based machinery from Japanese manufacturers but also Matchless, Ducati, Royal Enfield, Norton, Triumph, Indian, Harley-Davidson, Moto Guzzi, Bimota, BMW, BSA and Velocette.

Four reigning Australian champions will defend their titles around the tight 2.1km Baskerville circuit: Stephany Kapilawi-Jones (Honda) in P6 250cc Production; Corey Turner (Suzuki) in P6 Formula 1300; Tait Coghill (Honda/Suzuki) in P6 Ultra-Lightweight (up to 125cc) and P6 Lightweight (132-250cc) respectively; and Robert Marriner (Honda) in P6 Senior (368-500cc).

Their defences will be severely tested by not only the regular foes, but also by a large contingent of riders who have entered from Tasmania – with local knowledge of the Baskerville circuit only adding to their armoury.

On-track activity starts at 9.00am on Saturday and Sunday. Each class will receive two qualifying sessions before four races over the weekend to decide the 2023 champions.

Australian Marianos Nikolis Racing has produced his best Asia Talent Cup ride of the year in the Qatar finale last weekend, finishing an excellent fourth in race one. He backed that up with second in race two to conclude the series in 10th, four spots in front of countryman Levi Russo Racing.

Nikolis has now waved goodbye to the Asia Talent Cup, but he’ll be back overseas next year competing in the European Talent Cup class alongside the FIM Junior GP World Championship.

Aussie Jay Wilson completed a near-perfect season

Aussie Jay Wilson completed a near-perfect season in the 2023 All-Japan Motocross Championship with yet another maximum points haul at the ninth and final round in Sugo last weekend.

Wilson’s 1-1 scorecard in the 450cc class – the first another regulation victory but he was made to work a lot harder in the second after a tardy start – saw him complete the season with 22 wins out of 23 starts, mirroring his demolition job in the 250cc class last year.

“Today was a good way to finish the year and for me, it was nice to be able to ride injury-free after the last few events. The track here can be tricky, and the start is tough as you have to gate on the inside but if you don’t get the jump, and I didn’t in race two, then you get pinched off pretty bad and are way back in the field.”
