Welcome to the first of a new series of informative
product reviews by the MA Riders Division team. We have access to a
range of motorcycles, high quality riding gear and unique products for
riders, some already available in the shops some still finding their way
into production, but we don’t want to keep them to ourselves, it
is all about sharing!
The first review for the series is the MV Agusta Brutale 989R

Cruisin' for a Bruisin'
September 11, 2009
Our old friend, Peter 'the Bear' Thoeming has been up
to his usual tricks- creating niche magazines for motorcyclists, with
humour and wit.
The latest offshoot of the Australian Road Rider
masthead- Cruiser and Trike magazine is now on the newsstands,
and if you'd like, you can pay $7.50 for it.
If you're clever, and an MA member (which is a
bit of an tautology), you can score the same magazine for
just $5 an issue, delivered to your letterbox.
Universal Magazines, publishers of Road Rider,
Trailrider, Dirt Action, and of course the new
Cruiser and Trike magazine has cut MA member subscriptions even
further, meaning you can get six issues- a whole year- of
Cruiser and Trike, Trailrider or Road Rider for just
$30. Dirt Action comes out every month, but will cost you
just $66 a year, delivered.
For more information on MA magazine subscription
rates click

Triple Treat
September 2, 2009
Triumph's triple tempts tourers and track racers. The
desirable Daytona detonates the dynamite with a dextrous wrist.
Too much alliteration can never be enough, but our
Moto-Oz tester has added the new 675 Daytona to his top ten. This is
high praise from a bloke whose garage has housed some of the world's
exotica.
There's also a great ride story from the other side
of the ditch, from the south coast of New Zealand's north island,
intriguingly called the Wild West. You'll have to read about it.
Plus there are details on great offers from the
Australian Grand Prix Corporation exclusively for MA members, and
don't forget our MotoGP ride on Sunday 18 October. Gulp, only 6 weeks
away!
For the first time ever in Australia, motorcycles
will be included in overall transport and road infrastructure planning.
The Victorian Government has released a five year plan covering
motorcycle policy in that State which now counts motorcycles and
scooters as part of the overall transport system.
There are 41 pages of what may prove to be a milestone in motorcycle
policy, and for the most part, MA endorses it. More
details here
Eco Resort - environment and economy
August 18, 2009

of luxury facilities. Even a spa to soothe a hard day on the bike
away.
Best of all, Motorcycling Australia members get
15% discount off the best available rates. It's a
sensational way to get to know one of Phillip Islands best
spots. Click

better with a fantastic 7 day route that includes the Snowies,

Australia's best roads.

comfort of good food, and the fun of great company. Who could ask for
anything more?
Motorcycling Australia members can access the latest
Bluetooth technology and save money, now that the Strike Group have
joined our member benefits program.
Cardo Technology means that riders can enjoy easy
access to mobile phones, iPodsTM, GPS units,
VHF radio gear, pillions, and even communicate with other riders up to
half a kilometre away easily and without wires.

a 10% discount simply by logging on to our exclusive members'

Riders Away... to the ASBK
August 10, 2009
Getting VIP treatment was enough incentive to tempt
twenty NSW Riders' Division members to brave a very cold Sydney morning
for an MA ride to Eastern Creek Raceway.
They all received a showbag courtesy of the ASBK,
plus priority parking which meant they rode straight into the circuit to
enjoy a great day's spectating among our top road racers.
Thanks go to members Mike Cogar who led the ride and
Stu Horton-Stevens for the pics. Want to join us on our next ride?
There's one near you. Click here

Wheelin' out Savings
August 4, 2009
Carbon fibre is credited with the transformation of
top end racing. It's immensely strong yet light. If you've seen
a Confederate Motorcycle, you'll see it in its
ultimate form. Confederate use BST wheels, as do Ducati and dozens of
other race teams.
If you're a member of Motorcycling Australia, you can
have the same advantages that all the top race teams have, by fitting
BST wheels. Even better yet, as an MA member, you'll save a
cool grand. Yep, get $1,000 off wheels for
your Kawasaki ZX10 '08, BMW R1200 exc GS, Aprillia RSV
Mille, Just $3799 inc GST a pair. Members only. Limited time
only.
If you've never experienced "the c
word" (and you probably won't have unless you tune into
Melbourne Community TV Ch31) you might be surprised at how polished and
entertaining it can be. New episodes are now available as podcasts at www.cword.tv
In this episode, host Dieter Kahsnitz meets five
times World Champ Mick Doohan. Clash of the titans? Ego vs. ego?
Whatever, it's guaranteed to raise a smile (no, not Sergeant Pepper) .

V is for Victory
July 22, 2009
There's a new issue of Australia's most exciting
online motorcycle e-zine- Moto-Oz now on our
website.
This time round, as well as the usual round up of
news and events, there's also a sneak peek into the BMW factory in
Berlin, where they're celebrating 40 years of production, including
about 20 years where everything had to be brought through 'enemy
territory.'
Plus there's an exclusive test of the new Victory
Kingpin, not the full-dresser you'll find in all the other mags, but a
new competitor in the sports-touring marketplace. It's a great bike, and
a great story to go with it.
It might surprise you to know that Hyosung has gone
all high-tech, fitting fuel injection across the 250 and 650 range. Must
see about getting one for a test. Anyway, there's a lot more besides,
and if you're a member, you can read about it right
here.
lucky 13 slides again
July 20, 2009
While everyone's an expert when it comes to certain
matters- marriage counselling, legal matters and how to cook the perfect
BBQ sausage, you might be surprised that even long term riders can be
caught out on the road.
ACEM's Lucky 13 somehow manages to muddle through
when faced with every sort of hazard and danger on the road. For the
rest of us, the hazards are somewhat more real, and the consequences of
doing the wrong thing that much more painful and expensive.
Three more of Lucky 13's adventures have now been
uploaded onto our Rider
Safety pages and you can read them here.
On the same page, you'll also find a new report based
on the landmark MAIDS study of more than 900 real world motorcycle
crashes, and what we can all do about them.
Phillip Island Accommodation
June 17, 2009
If you're heading to the Island, for a ride day,
track day, holidays. or just because there's such great riding nearby,
check out the Coachman Motel in Cowes, about 6kms from the MotoGP
circuit.
The Coachman Motel's Robin and Josef Moser will make
you welcome, find you a nice room, plus if you tell them you're an MA
member when booking, they'll apply a 5% discount, and a
free room upgrade (when available). Click
here for more information.
MAIDS over like new
June 10, 2009
The landmark MAIDS study into more than 900
motorcycle crashes in five European States has just released a second
report, which you can find
here.
There's also some information on a workshop held
earlier this year into motorcycle and scooter safety, by ACEM.
Riders’ Division receives a boost

Motorcycling Australia’s Riders’ Division
has received a tremendous shot in the arm with the recent appointment of
Matthew Bennett in the role of Riders’ Division Assistant.
Bennett is a passionate motorcycle enthusiast whose
experiences include hospitality and hotel management, running his own
business and Harley Davidson tours at Uluru.
Bennett has been featured on the ‘Five Minutes

Super Deal from Superbike Club
April 14,
2009
Join the Superbike Club in
2009 and save $1,925
This is a great opportunity for Motorcycle Australia members to ride a
Ducati Desmosedici RR one day and a Bimota DB7 the next for only
$7,000 per year.
The Superbike Club is offering MA members a special
of no joining fee (normally $1,925) if you
join in 2009. You'll get access to a fantastic garage of dozens of
superbikes, without the hassle of ownership like depreciation,
insurance, maintenance and storage, leaving you free to enjoy the
ride.
Choose between Ducati Desmosedicis, Bimota
DB7s, CanAm Spyders, Victory, Harley-Davidson or Triumph cruisers, or
off-roaders like Kawasaki KX450 or BMW R1200GS.
More than 1,300 member numbers went into my helmet
for Honda General Manager, Tony Hinton (l) to draw this
morning. Any one of them could have won our Honda
package.
But as they say, there can only be one winner, and
this time it was Jan Lawlor of Coffs Harbour in NSW. (Pause for
applause).
She and husband Tony now have the very hard task of
choosing which bike to replace their 1983 BMW K100. It's a tough
job, but some has to do it.
Lucky loathes Diesel
March 24, 2009
Diesel and water don't mix. Toss in a motorcycle and
you have the complete recipe for disaster.
This month's Lucky 13 cartoon tackles the slippery
problem of encountering diesel and other liquid spills on two
wheels.
MA is a member of the Motorcycle Safety Consultative
Committee (MSCC), a National forum between the Australian Government and
motorcyclists.
The MSCC convened a Motorcycle & Scooter Safety
Summit in April 2008 to explore key safety issues and to scope new and
existing safety measures.
The Summit was to provide input to the development of
a post-2010 National Road Safety Strategy based on practical,
evidence-based recommendations for actions to improve motorcycle
safety.
Victorian motorcyclists will be joining forces
to raise money for, and show respect to those affected by the Black
Saturday fires. On April 5, the Ride for the Hills departs from St Kilda
at 11am heading, literally, for the Hills. At Whittlesea, there'll be a
huge Auction and Raffle. Come and join us or just donate
online:
Another great member benefit. Motorcycling
Australia members now get 10% off the price of all Starider
Motorcycle Products, whether you purchase them online or at Stariders'
new factory outlet at 557 North Road, Ormond in Melbourne's South
East.
Starider is run by riders who only sell what they are
prepared to use themselves on the road, trail or track. They stock a
huge range of gear, from jackets and jeans, to gloves and helmets, plus
a big range of accessories for your bike.
Starider is also one of the few places to stock
clothing specially designed for kids and for women. The end of too-big
jackets billowing in the wind or riding up and giving you cold
kidneys. Click
here for more information.
Plus we're still looking for help on the MA
stand...in return for your three hours time, you'll get free entry into
the GA area of the circuit. Great racing, great weather... what
more can you ask for? If you're a member and you'd like to
take part, email me at riders@ma.org.au

Fire Emergency Response
February 9, 2009
This week's disasterous bushfires have affected us
all in different ways. Lives lost, houses destroyed, lives affected for
years to come.
Many of us love the areas burnt- they have been our
homes, and our playgrounds for both off-road riders and road riders for
may years. Motorcycling Australia extends our sympathies to
everyone affected by this terrible situation.
We are working on several projects - a fundraising
ride and a Benefit to help those affected, so stay tuned. In the
meantime, please donate money to www.redcross.org.au
First Moto-Oz for 2009 now Online ¡Viva Italia!
January 29, 2009
Despite the appearance of Triumph's brilliant new Speed triple on the
cover, this issue of Moto-Oz has a distinctly Italian flavour.
We've been snapping the exotica at Melbourne's
Festival of Italian Motorcycles, including a rarely seen Laverda
Jota and a Ducati 750F1, and we take a sneak peek at Ducati's
newest-, the Streetfighter and the 1198, said to be all new.
Plus there's a extensive road test of the low seat
version of the R1200GS, which usually comes with its own ladder.
Our tester Philip Dennett spent 5,000 km on the beast, and was just
about ready to keep going to Dakar when reality took hold.
Add to that the good oil on Triumph's Triple treat,
and you've got your weekend taken care of. Click
here for more info.
Chasing a Rainbow Ride
January 29, 2009
Leaving from outside Melbourne City Triumph on Sunday
15 Feb, and travelling over some of Australia's best roads, the Zaidee
Foundation's Chasing a Rainbow Ride will take six glorious days to get
to the Gold Coast Motorcycle Expo, raising awareness of Organ
Donation on the way.
There will be good company, good food, and full back
up from the Motorcycling Australia van, shadowing us the whole way.
You can be a part, for an hour, a day or the whole
ride. Much more

Lucky 13 Strikes
Again
January 27, 2009
Lucky 13, whose Fairy Godmother seems to be working
overtime, has slipped and spun his way through another adventure, this
time discovering just how far he can push the limits of adhesion on all
types of road surfaces.
Matbe he's outwitted the laws of physics, maybe it's
because it just turned the Year of the Ox?
Who knows? Whatevever the answer, there's a lot of
Euro kitsch and irony right
here and perhaps a touch of learning, too.

What's in a Rider's Mind?
January 19, 2009
Deakin University in Victoria conducted an online
survey on the behaviour of motorcyclists, in particular abour risk
taking and the relative frequency of crashes. They also asked about
protective clothing and speeding. The respondents said they:
Nearly always wore protective clothing,
Occasionally sped, and
Hardly ever committed control errors (corner too fast or too
wide), traffic errors (e.g., fail to notice pedestrians or signs) or
stunts (wheelies and wheel spins).
It all makes for very interesting reading. There is a summary
available here.
Barriers to Change
January 13, 2009
Motorcycling Australia is calling for all Australian
Governments and road construction authorities to take motorcyclists into
account when designing, constructing and maintaining roads.
A new European report from EuroRAP examines the
effect that road design has on motorcyclists, in particular crash
barriers which are designed with cars primarily in mind.

Lucky 13 joins Motorcycling Australia
December 17, 2008
The European Motorcycle Industry [ACEM] initiated the
MAIDS study, the most scientific and comprehensive look at motorcycle
crashes ever undertaken.
Based on the findings of the MAIDS study, ACEM has
developed Lucky 13, a cartoon character who
glides through life on his bike, somehow avoiding the problems that the
rest of us seem to cop.
Now Lucky 13 has joined MA, and you can see his
latest adventures here

Making the Roads Safer
August 20, 2008
Motorcycling
Australia went to our first meeting of the Motorcycle Safety
Consultative Committee in Canberra on Monday 18 August.
Sitting around the
table were seven other riders'
group and motorcycle industry reps and people from the Department of
Transport. (It's actually got a much longer name). Details of the
discussions remain under wraps until everyone's signed off on them, but
the Committee, which helped to arrange the April Motorcycle and Scooter
Safety Summit, discussed the wash-up from the event and ways to move the
Summit recommendations forward.
As well, there was
a compilation of some of the latest motorcycle safety statistics
presented, and I'll attempt to summarise some of these for you
on our
rights pages.
Riding on the Sheep's Back
August 19, 2008
Wool has been the product of choice for polar
explorers and motorcyclists for more than a hundred years.
The relatively recent availability of superfine
Merino wool means that you can now wear wool against your skin without
itching or irritation. Wool retains its ability to keep you warm
even when wet.
Woolerina takes superfine Merino fibres grown in
Australia, knits them in Australia, then cuts and sews them in Australia
to produce a small range of supersoft, super comfortable and super warm
garments ideal to wear while riding in Australia.
They're even 'super wash' rated so you can take care
of them on the road.
Motorcycling Australia members get 10%
off the price of premium Woolerina products, just in time for
winter.
Click
here for more information on getting 10% off Woolerina products.
