Looking Ahead
1 September 2009
In this section of the MA website / e-Newsletter, Motorcycling
Australia's CEO, David White, will look ahead at some of the pressing
issues facing motorcycling in this country.
Australia's world class motorcycle talent
From a competition aspect the last two weeks have
produced, from a world perspective, outstanding results in two
significantly different disciplines of motorcycle sport.
Firstly, on the weekend of the 15th/16th August
the Junior Motocross World Championships were held in New Zealand.
Motorcycling Australia sent a team of 16 riders to compete in the event.
The results were outstanding with Jay Wilson winning the 85cc World
Championship and Tye Simmonds finishing second in the 125cc
Championship.
This is the first time Motorcycling Australia has
supported riders to participate in this championship with a fantastic
outcome – well beyond our expectations. Furthermore, this was an
historic occasion being the first time an Australian has won a Motocross
World Championship. We must start planning to send representatives to
next years event in France.
The last weekend was the running of the Track
Racing Sidecar World Championship 1000cc at La Reole in France. This was
the first time the event was conducted with World Championship status
being previously ran as a World Cup. Unfortunately, some of the leading
Australian Sidecar teams boycotted the event because of the perception
regarding the suitability of the track to the “Australia”
type sidecars. However, we were able to put together a team
of seven sidecars and the events was won by Mick Headland (South
Australian) with Paul Waters in the sidecar with second place going
to Gary Moon (QLD) and Josh Sinnott. Fourth place went to Russell
Mitchell returning to racing after a long lay off with Tina Karan in the
sidecar. Could this be the first time a lady has finished that high in
an open world championship motorcycle event?
Both of these events recorded excellent results
for Australia. Two vastly different events with significant difference
in the age grouping of the respective competitors.
What does it tell us? – We are competitive
in world class events in motorcycle sport.
Hearty congratulations not only to the winners,
but all those who participated in these World Championships.
